Who are we? 

SmartX Pty. Ltd. is a surveying and applied design technology consultancy, subcontractor and spatial data specialist.

Established in 2018, SmartX’s mission is to apply advanced technology and data analysis to the construction, design and development industry. Our services increase safety, productivity and profitability for our customers.

We offer professional services in land surveying, scan to BIM (also known as reality capture), GIS, and specialised data for machine control technology, plant and equipment.

With significant experience in 3D data creation, analysis and manipulation, combined with GNSS (GPS) site establishment and survey contro, SmartX provides its clients with the full service technical, and wrap-around support, they need to enable and maximise this advanced equipment.

We offer hire of survey equipment, including total stations, GNSS rovers and base stations, and wet and dry hire of CAT Next Gen excavators. Our CAT operators are experienced, reliable, and trained in how to use the technology.

Wedderburn Secondary College

Project Type: Context and Site Model


Project Brief:

Our client was an architect, commissioned to design a significant extension and new building for Wedderburn College. They needed a comprehensive understanding of the existing site conditions, including current school buildings and other structures, terrain, vegetation, and other aspects of the surrounding area.

Historically, this information is captured and passed on to architects and engineers via a feature and level survey, however, these are limited in how much detail can be captured and represented in a 2D format and then requires a lot of work on the part of the design consultants, to convert the site information into 3D and/or Building Information.

So SmartX, using state-of-the-art technology, conducted a comprehensive 3D laser scan survey of the site and captured all pertinent site features, complete with survey controls to ensure survey level geo-location precision and accuracy. This data was utilized to generate a highly accurate 3D Building Information Model (BIM) 3D and 3D terrain model. The 3D models along alongside the feature survey, provided a detailed representation of the site that could be relied upon for this and future developments.

 


Ballarat Railway Station

Project Type: Building Structure Assessment


Project Brief:

Our client had been requested to provide a sturctural analysis of the Ballarat Railway Station, for the purpose of determining what remedial works were required.

SmartX was engaged to document or ‘reality capture’ the building and its structure, for the purpose of this analysis, and it was paramount to obtain an accurate depiction of the existing conditions of the structural members.

To meet the client’s requirements, SmartX undertook a 3D laser scan survey to capture all members and then from this site data generated a 3D BIM model, which was accurate to within +/-5mm. This provided the client with a detailed and reliable dataset, which was suitable and efficient to be used as the basis of the remedial design works for the structure.

 


600 Bourke Street

Project Type: Communications Tower Structural Assessment


Project Brief:

SmartX was engaged to document or ‘reality capture’ a communications tower mast, atop of skyscraper. Our client had been engaged to undertake a structural analysis of the mast, and needed a highly precise 3D Building Information Model (BIM), to an accuracy of +/-3mm.

Considering the complexity, technical specifications and access difficulty of the communication tower, it became apparent that a 3D laser scan survey would be the most suitable approach. This not only provided the required level of accuracy but also captured the entire structure in one site visit, eliminating the need to revisit the site numerous times over.

Scanning and generating a 3D model of this type of structure is not an easy task, which requires specialised field and point cloud processing skills and capability. SmartX has this capability and delivered the 3D BIM model, along with accompanying 2D drawings of the communication tower.

 


La Trobe Private Hospital

Project Type: Existing Conditions Conformance Report - Concrete Slab Levels Analysis


Project Brief:

Our client needed to ascertain the level of “flatness” across 2,000m² of exising concrete floor surfaces, as part of their renovations at a private hopital, over three levels. Due to the sensitive end use, a high level of accuracy (+/-3mm tolerance) was required, which traditional surveying methods would not have been not sufficient.

SmartX utilized the advanced capabilities of 3D laser scanning, to collect detailed data and then generate precise surface maps, which were used to identify potential areas that fell outside of conformance and would require further remedial works.

The cut-fill maps also provide the basis for quantitative analysis and can be used to determine the volume of material required to be applied and/or removed.
